Toxicity and the Antidote - TEAM CHAT

If you’ve played online games you will have witnessed, or even been the subject of your fair share of insults. No matter the game, players will inevitably get mad and hurl abuse at their teammates, the opposing team, the game, their internet connection, or really whatever may be in their line of sight. I think what’s important to remember in these situations is to remain calm and collected. First of all because you should be focusing on playing instead of engaging in a battle of witticisms (see: swearing in caps), and secondly because getting involved always just makes things worse. Getting into an argument is a sure-fire way of causing general frustration for both the opposing team and your own, leading to a bad game.

I know it can be difficult, but the best thing to do when someone starts to flame is to just ignore it and try to stay positive. If they’re on an opposing team, mute them. If they’re on your own, try to analyse their criticism for what you might be able to improve on, and dismiss the excess. Finally, remember that there’s no point in arguing with a teammate over what you or they should have done. Take in the information being suggested, and just move on, focusing on what’s yet to come. You may make a comeback of the game yet.
