Rainbow Six: Siege a cool shooter between realistic and arcade

This is just a little article about a game I
like. The type of text will typically talk about a feature of the game I find
to be pretty interesting or relate to an article written by someone earlier
that week.
Ben talked about team
play earlier in the week, which allows me to do a weird tangent to the game I’m
talking about this week Rainbow Six: Siege. For those unaware, it's a tactical
shooter by Ubisoft that is both 1-part run and gun (think call of duty) and
1-part tactics (think ARMA). As the games grow and tournaments organised so do
the tactics used by groups. However, this isn't an analysis of professional
tactics rather this a something about casual play where the tactics are more
guidelines and can be done with very little communication and are simply learnt
through observation playing the game.
Here I attempt to elaborate on some of the basic roles that can be found
in casual play. Starting with two for each side.
On the defending
side, we got two very clear roles that players will like to play. Starting with
the Anchor. They will be the player
that will sit on site and defend it from attackers, simple stuff. They won't
leave the site to defend unless something forces them off it such as them be
needed by a friend elsewhere or they are killed by attackers. The second is the
Roamer. Roamers are the opposite of
the anchor they will move around the map and attempt to flank the enemy as they
move to attack the site. However, the good
thing to remember is roles can change during a round. For example, is roaming
becomes too dangerous the roamer can return to the site and begin to anchor.
On the attacking
side, we have two distinct roles as well. We have the hard breacher. They are the character/operator that can breach into
reinforced walls are very important in some sites where you need to breach open
reinforced walls. As such their role is to stay safe until they can breach the
necessary walls. On the opposite end the spectrum we have the fragger they will typically play
operators with high potential to kill. The job is straightforward, to kill the
enemy leading to more aggressive play.
Attacker roles are a bit more static than defender roles as hard breachers
are specific to characters and fraggers benefit immensely from character choice
as such in some cases role changing during the round such as fragger to hard
breacher can be impossible.
Although as said
before communication is difficult it with randoms you can alleviate some of the
issues by picking characters that are able to fulfil roles that your team is
currently lacking.
