Mods and Modifications: A new game from a old.
Allan here having a more casual discussion on gaming today
primarily about the new mutation games mode in DOTA 2 coming with the new battle
pass. It is essentially a game mode with new effects and modifiers that change
the base game, for example, we have seen people exploding when they die or
allowing for people to resurrect teammates on the spot. The idea of modifiers is hardly new with
older games such as big head mode from Golden Eye on the N64 to skulls in the
Halo Series.
Modifiers in a game provide players with a means to
customise their games to their own liking making it harder for those seeking a
challenge or having some fun modifiers that allow for some fun group play. All
of these add to the replay value of the game allowing for a single game to be
played throughout.
However, as gaming
develops it appears that modifiers created by the game developers have started
to die out leading to mods to fill in the gaps.
The age of mods leads to exciting creations as Counter-Strike: Source
zombies, Team fortress and even a game itself build around mods Garry's
Mod.
Even today game developers have seen the benefits of
allowing the community to create free content for their games increasing the
value and enjoyment to their consumers. For those who dislike the changes to
the baseline experience, it is wholly op-in so it's up for anyone to enjoy. I
can say with confidence those game developers that take the time to create a
game that supports modding and provides modifications can find a strong
consumer base that is able to support the game in ways the developer can’t for
years to come. With strong examples today is seen in Bethesda games and Binding
of Isacc.
Personally, I love modding and the modifications the game
developer themselves provide adding massive replay value to many games and even
sometimes leading to a game wholly different from its original form.
